Attracting Hummingbirds

Female Anna's HummingbirdPut up a Hummingbird Feeder

There are approximately nine species of hummingbirds that migrate to the United States and Canada annually, with the Anna's and Costa's Hummingbirds staying year round in a few locations. Even a few Rufous are now being seen in the South East portion of the United States during the winter.  You need to find out the time frame that hummingbirds visit your area in order to determine when to put up your feeder. Get ready for the migration.  You can track and report your first Rufous and Ruby Throat Hummingbird sightings of the year starting in February at Journey North.

Using a basic glass hummingbird feeder that is red in color at the base with home made (fresh) nectar is best.

It is better to have multiple feeders that are smaller, than one feeder that is bigger. This will reduce the chance for one hummingbird to dominate the feeder and chase others off.

At Wild Birds, Hummingbirds, Butterflies & More, we carry several different kinds Hummingbird Nectar and of course Hummingbird Feeders

When first putting out a feeder, it may be best to put it away from your house, in an area visible from above, but less distracting. Feeders near houses are less likely to be seen. Additionally, movement from inside the house may scare the hummingbird away. Once you have some hummingbirds visiting your feeder, you may wish to move closer to your house for better viewing. Many find the use of a hummingbird feeder w/ suction cup their favorite as it puts the birds right next to the house. Alternatively you can also purchase a 6-1/2" Width Hanging Window Arm.

Feeders should be kept up for approximately two to four weeks after the last hummingbird has been spotted for any straggling migratory hummingbirds. Occasionally, some locations may have a hummingbird staying over the winter. Keep your eyes peeled!

Do you have a “Guarder” hummingbird that chases the others away? This bird is simply being instinctive in protecting its food source when other food sources may have depleted themselves and does not realize that you are likely to keep the feeder full regardless of how many come to your feeder. There are two schools of thought. One is to put several (not just a couple) feeders up right in a row, which will make it harder to chase other hummers away. The other thought is if you only have a couple, place a the other feeders on different sides of the house or different places in the yard, perhaps out of line of sight from where the “Guarder” is perching.

Do you get a lot of hummingbirds such that you are using several large feeders? One trick I do, which admittedly is likely to void the manufacturer’s warranty, is to add additional holes. I like to use the Perky Pet 30 oz. Glass Hummingbird Feeder, because of its large size as well as it has a circular perch around the base of the feeder. I take a drill and I add two additional similar size hole that the hummers can feed from in between each of the yellow flowers. No the hummingbirds do not need yellow flowers to feed from. A hole will simply suffice!
